Our family has directly farmed and/or rented out and near Kingsville for decades, but it has been a while since any of us personally sat in a tractor seat. With the passing of my parents, we found ourselves in new territory and needed to learn about the farmland market prices, what mineral rights meant, and how best to time the sale with the least impact to the current tenant and the future buyer. 
Based on a number of referrals, I spoke with numerous appraisers/brokers. In talking with Mike Kastner, I found a down-to-earth person who has his own farmland and knows the Kingsville area. These attributes were important as he should be in a better position to know the real estate market for land in South Texas and who would be the likely buyers in the area. Mike took the time to answer questions, educated me on the importance of mineral rights, and was a straight shooter, always with integrity. This was a requirement as I was a trustee acting on behalf of our family's next generation. He did not know it, but he reminded me of my father, who was also a farmer, a farm appraiser, and a real estate agent in Illinois years ago. 
Mike used his expertise to keep me updated on what was occurring and the decisions that needed to be made (without overload). It was a calm discussion approach that allowed for flexibility. Ultimately, there was a well-coordinated, straight-forward land sale for more than asking price and three months ahead of my time target -- thanks to Mike Kastner.
